The Cancer Support Community (CSC) is seeking a dedicated, professional, and passionate full-time Director of Education. Reporting to the Vice President, Helpline, Education, and Outreach, the Director of Education is responsible for the creation, development, implementation, dissemination and evaluation of dynamic, evolving, and multi-faceted education initiatives, including CSC’s hallmark, “Frankly Speaking About Cancer” (FSAC) program. The Director supervises day-to-day operations of the dynamic Education team to ensure that CSC educational initiatives are delivered at the highest standards of plain language, health literacy, and psychosocial care for people impacted by cancer. The Director should possess strong interpersonal and collaborative skills to drive the operational execution and implementation of day-to-day activities. The Director should also possess strong project management experience, with an understanding of the challenges involved with managing portfolios of projects, in order to serve as the team’s project lead when working with internal teams and external partners to ensure that CSC educational resources and initiatives align in a coherent operating model, consistent with the mission, culture, and strategy of the organization. The Director is ultimately responsible for the development and curation of CSC’s educational initiatives, including print, digital and online materials, and evaluation. Further, the Director contributes to CSC fund development and grant writing – including ideation to drive innovation, and related grant management.
The ideal candidate should possess highly effective leadership skills and project management experience and be able to demonstrate experience with community outreach, coalition building and advocacy.

Educational Development, Outreach And Management
- Building upon the existing Frankly Speaking about Cancer (FSAC) programs, develop innovative educational programs and ensure they continue to reflect patient experience and evolving science by utilizing patient and caregiver insights collected throughout CSC, identifying needs and communication gaps and addressing them, and by including patient & caregiver insights in the co-creation of materials.
- Work collaboratively with FSAC partners, including other non-profit organizations, patient advocates, and health care providers to inform the development and delivery of patient-centered educational programs.
- Ensure the integrity, cultural relevance, and gold-standard plain language and health literacy appropriateness of all written, digital, and online educational materials with ongoing updates.
- Conduct program evaluation to continuously improve FSAC deliverables, as well as to provide insights and outcomes/impact data to funders.
- Ensure continuous improvement through evaluation of education outcomes.
- Track year over year distribution and outreach of all FSAC materials.
- Finalize scope of work and innovative deliverables based on funding provided.
- Attract, motivate, engage, and develop a diverse staff, fostering an inclusive, mission-focused culture.
- Provide supervision and opportunities for professional growth both within CSC teams and outside organizations.
- Manage work of staff, contractors, vendors, and interns to produce high quality educational and programmatic deliverables.
- Support Vice President, Helpline, Education, and Outreach, in maintaining an organizational structure for the Education team that is guided by the CSC strategic plan, defining organizational responsibilities, decision-making authorities, and management of department resources.
- Foster a digital first mindset amongst the Education team and across the enterprise in alignment with the broader organizational transformation initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Communications and Digital teams to enhance the user experience for FSAC programs and deliverables.
- Work closely with the Communications and Digital teams to brand, promote, and target CSC and/or FSAC materials to diverse groups; and cross-promote all web content.
- Work in consultation with the Program & Health Equity team to ensure materials are culturally relevant and adapted to different communities of people living with cancer.
- Support Vice President, Helpline, Education, and Outreach in working with external stakeholders to distribute and disseminate programs (e.g., workshops).
- Stay abreast of emerging issues, trends and opportunities in patient-centered education and ensure that CSC remains in the forefront of educational program delivery to people impacted by cancer.
- Serve as external face/liaison for the Education team at professional conferences, with funders, advocacy boards, and other cancer and health advocacy organizations when required by CSC leadership.
Skills And Abilities
- Strong education and program management experience with an understanding of the challenges of managing portfolios of projects.
- Experience with community outreach, coalition building, and advocacy. Ability to work with multiple and diverse stakeholders.
- Experience with cultural adaptations and/or health education among communities of color and/or historically underserved populations, a plus.
- Outstanding written and verbal skills with ability to communicate clearly about complex health issues using plain language and health literacy best practices.
- Experience in budget development and oversight.
- Demonstrated experience in educational needs assessment and evaluation.
- Demonstrated leadership and acute analytical skills. Experience supervising and mentoring staff as well as managing the work of outside consultants and vendors.
- Highly effective interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to leading teams, the ability to quickly develop productive, collaborative relationships with staff across CSC, partners, and other external stakeholders.
- Highly motivated and self-directed, including the ability to work independently, to take the lead role on assigned projects, and to multi-task effectively while maintaining attention to detail, accuracy of product work, and meeting deadlines.
- Team player, creative thinker, effective problem-solver, and customer service orientation.
- General administrative skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and project management software (including Smartsheet).
- Minimum of master’s degree in public health, social or behavioral sciences (e.g., Public Health, Health Communication, Social Work, Social Psychology, Sociology or related health and human services fields), communications, or related field, required.
- Minimum of two years of project management experience, preferably in a health education or health communications position, preferred.
- Experience in cancer patient education development, a plus.
- MCHES or CHES certified, a plus.
- CITI training certificate, or completion of CITI training within 3 months of hire, required.
