The AI Lab at the University of Guelph, in partnership with the School of Environmental Sciences, is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in Artificial Intelligence for Controlled Environment Agriculture. This interdisciplinary project aims to develop autonomous, AI-driven plant production systems in greenhouse agriculture, with a focus on sustainable and data-driven optimization of crop yields.

The successful candidate will contribute to the following research areas:

• Development of AI and machine learning algorithms for predicting plant water and nutrient requirements.
• Analysis of time-series and sensor data, including aerial, rootzone, and fertigation data.
• Collaboration with experts in horticulture, engineering, and computing.
• Dissemination of research findings through publications and conference presentations.
  
  

Requirements

• MSc degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field (completed within the past 2–3 years).
• Strong proficiency in Python, PyTorch, and AI/ML tools.
• Experience in time-series prediction or environmental systems is considered an asset.
• Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
