Summary

We are a newly formed boutique practice that handles complex plaintiff personal injury matters, as well as commercial/corporate/employment disputes, class actions, civil rights, and appeals. We are seeking a junior paralegal but are open-minded and interested in hearing from any paralegal interested in working with us. Below is a summary of the requirements and responsibilities for our paralegals:

  • Knowledgeable on all aspects of handling civil and personal injury litigation in North Carolina state and federal courts.
  • Comfortable with full involvement in case management, client interface, drafting and filing, being responsible for case file management, and able to both collaborate and delegate.
  • Able to organize and summarize all information related to the file (contacts, timeline, notes/memos, client documents, third part documents, etc.).
  • Able to move cases forward by recommending action to lead attorney and/or associate and executing without awaiting instruction.
  • Able to use AI and to search for AI use in all aspects of our work.

You need to be able to take lead and manage all aspects of trial preparation, including:

  • Organize and prioritize all deliverables necessary to timely prepare for trial.
  • Manage timing of deadlines and prioritization of outstanding action items.
  • Drafting, finalization, and filing of all pretrial motions, the pretrial order, etc.
  • Coordinate and manage witness contact, service of subpoenas, timing of expert testimony.
  • Ensuring all tech/AV needs met.
  • Assist in witness preparation.
  • Play integral role during trials, including:
  • Exhibit and document management
  • Client/expert/witness contact to ensure they are fully updated and prepared for trial.
  • Delegate work to administrative assistant as necessary.
  • Ensure trial team is fully prepared and has all that they need to try each case.
  • Attend trial and manage information flow, scheduling, tech needs, personal needs of attorney.

The responsibilities from client intake through initiation of litigation include:

  • Preparation of initial letters of representation, organize and set up new case file.
  • Work with legal assistant in ordering, indexing and maintaining all injury-related medical records and bills for cases and keeping such records updated, organized, and summarized.
  • Assist in the creation of summary documents, such as timelines, medical chronologies, relevant people and parties and contact information, etc.
  • Assist in expert retention and flow of information to expert during review.
  • Work with legal assistant in ordering, indexing and maintaining all pre and post non-injury related medical records for cases as directed by attorney.
  • Regularly communicate with clients regarding status of case and treatment and update attorney.
  • Participate in research/investigation phase, including client background, defendant background, social media research, public records research, organization and summation of information found.
  • Draft pleadings and initial sets of discovery.
  • Work with legal assistant in the preparation of settlement brochures.

The responsibilities from inception of litigation up until pretrial phase include:

  • Drafting of discovery requests, discovery responses, motions and memorandums, case management orders and/or DSOs, declarations/affidavits.
  • Handle all e-filing (Odyssey, PACER, AAA) and ensure related case file is updated with all filings
  • Work with administrative assistant to ensure all deadlines are calendared.
  • Engage with defense paralegal, court staff, witness/experts regarding all aspects of the case.
  • Participate in development of case and case theory.
  • Communicate with adjusters regarding medical payments, updates on client condition and information as requested by attorney.
  • Organize and catalogue document productions.
  • Interface with attorney and e-discovery vendor, and participate in creation of ESI protocol.
  • Help prepare attorneys for all court interface, from filings to hearings, as well as all depositions.
  • Assist in hearings and depositions as necessary.
  • Organize deposition summaries, transcripts, exhibits.
  • Continuously check applicable rules (including local rules) to ensure no deadlines missed, required information/filings provided to the court, and internal fire drills avoided at all costs.

The Responsibilities Related To Mediation And Settlement Include

  • Work with Executive Director to track all liens, case costs, and other information considered at mediation and included in ultimate settlement statement
  • Identify mediators and availability, and help attorneys prepare for mediation, including participation at mediation at time.
