APPLICANTS MUST BE PERMANENT IN THE SUPERVISING SPECIAL OFFICER CIVIL SERVICE TITLE.
The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is one of the largest organizations of its kind committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City. Collaborating with other Public Agencies and Not-For-Profit Partners, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it occurs, reduce street homelessness and assist New Yorkers to transition from shelter into appropriate permanent housing. The newly created Shelter Security Management team is tasked with the important role of establishing and maintaining security in DHS facilities. The Shelter Security Management Team will expand on existing strategies to enhance security and better connect with New Yorkers experiencing homelessness to services, shelter, and housing by taking a trauma-informed approach to site management and security while simultaneously monitoring the effectiveness of this approach supported by empirical data related to the attainment of overall security goals.
The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for one (1) Supervising Special Officer II to function as Lieutenant who will:

Minimum Qualifications
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of fulltime satisfactory experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security.
Individuals serving in this title are designated as Peace Officers by the New York State Criminal Procedure Law. Therefore, all candidates must be qualified to serve as Peace Officers. Incumbents must satisfy the training requirements established by the State of New York for Peace Officers and obtain certification. Once obtained, this certification must be maintained for the duration of employment.

The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for one (1) Supervising Special Officer II to function as Lieutenant who will:
- Be responsible for ensuring that the highest level of security is provided at an assigned DHS location.
- Maintain and prepare records and reports of all incidents reported by Field Sergeants and Captains.
- Develop and coordinate the security staff schedule and maintain attendance records for Field Staff at DHS locations.
- Evaluate the performance of Supervisor Officer Level I and Special Officer assigned to DHS locations.
- Plan training for officers by evaluating their performance based on security reports and evaluation.
- Make recommendations to management in order to increase level of security; perform administrative tasks, as directed; and determine the seriousness of incidents.
- Have knowledge of DHS Police Patrol Guide, NYS Penal Law, NYS Criminal Procedure Law, and any other relevant laws and/or guidelines required to be enforced or acted upon in performance of duty.

- Two years of experience as a Supervising Special Officer; or
- In addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I above, two additional years of full-time experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
