GIS Specialist
(Part Time, Non-Exempt)
$20.85 to $29.25

Position Summary
Under the close supervision of the GIS Coordinator, this position is responsible for collecting gray or green infrastructure asset information using pencil and paper, laptops, GPS units, tablets or other data collection devices. Requires knowledge of or ability to learn to use ESRI ArcGIS software and other apps to collect, edit and modify data on GPS devices, tablets or desktop computers.
This is a 3 to 4 month position.
Essential Duties
Education And/or Experience
This position regularly uses; printers, hand-held data entry device, telephone, copy/fax/scanner machine, and other common office equipment. Frequent use of computer software applications: ArcGIS 10+iPad data collection devices, Assorted apps, Microsoft Access, Excel and Word, Internet browsers, particularly Edge, Chrome and Safari, Ability to use Google Earth and/or Google Maps. May also drive a personal and/or District vehicle.
Working Environment
This position requires regular work outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions, ecosystems, landscapes and wildlife. Subject to exposure to dust, noise, and chemicals. On feet for most of the work day, walking over uneven terrain/surfaces and covering long distances in short segments. Office environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.
Physical Requirements
Stand, walk, sit for extended periods, handle and operate objects and office equipment, reach outward and above shoulder and carry, pull, push or lift up to 10 lbs. May occasionally climb, crawl, squat, kneel and lift up to 20 lbs. Must be able to see close up and at a distance with vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus allowing a broad field of vision. Must communicate clearly and effectively, must understand and be understood.

In addition, we maintain nearly 3,800 acres of developed and open space land, including 119 multi-purpose athletic fields, more than 100 parks, nearly 80 miles of trails, 60 playgrounds, 56 tennis courts, and the 880-acre South Platte Park.

Essential Duties
- Locates and inventories park infrastructure assets and/or amenities by collecting geospatial data using various data collecting techniques and devices.
- Provides assistance to park staff with data collection and data saving procedures using tree inventory software and ArcGIS software and cartographic skills.
- Coordinates with and assists District Departments with collecting, analyzing and displaying geospatial data, as requested and assigned.
- Troubleshoots and corrects problems with GIS/GPS related hardware and software and maintains and updates hardware and software as needed.
- Ensures proper care of assigned tools and equipment and performs minor maintenance or notifies appropriate personnel of need for maintenance.
- Respond to inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service trainings, orientations, and emergency drills.
- Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.
- Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly and calmly. Completes Accident/Incident report. Inspect and correct or inform supervisor of any facility or equipment hazards. Communicate issues/complaints to supervisor as needed.
Education And/or Experience
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) year college or vocational degree/certificate in Geographical Information Systems, geography, natural resources or related field is preferred.
- Background in urban forestry, arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, grounds maintenance or other closely related field is beneficial.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment. Must be insurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the duration of employment.
- Knowledge and skills associated with Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Parks and Recreation asset inventories with an emphasis on worker safety.
- Basic knowledge of; GPS units and how they function, mapping and asset data collection, ESRI ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel and/or Access software is helpful.
- Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and general office equipment (computer, copier, fax, telephone, etc.).
- Proficiency with applicable computer software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Must have the ability to perform multiple functions at once and the ability to handle the public in a friendly and professional manner.
- Must have the ability to communicate effectively verbally; establish and maintain working relationships with employees and the public.
