Job Responsibilities

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division is searching to fill two (2) Forensic Technician II positions in our Forensic Services - DNA Casework Department. The candidates must have a bachelor's degree in a biological, chemical, forensic science, or related field from an accredited college/university or obtain within 90 days of the posting date , integrity, and a basic understanding of scientific principles involved in DNA analysis.

General Responsibility

Under appropriate supervision, perform a variety of technical support duties in the DNA Casework Department. Perform quality control and safety functions according to policy. Perform various functions and analytical processes associated with DNA casework; and, in general, assist in maintaining smooth operation of the DNA Casework department.

Specific Duties

  • Perform quality control and maintenance procedures for departmental instruments and reagents as outlined in the DNA Casework Operations Manual. Record maintenance and quality control records properly in Laboratory Asset Module. Coordinate with DNA Technical Leader to perform troubleshooting of any issues. Communicate quality control and maintenance results to technical staff as appropriate.
  • Review case submissions and triage cases submitted for DNA analysis. Ensure teams and examiners are properly notified of new submissions or cases. Initiate and respond to communication from submitters appropriately. Properly communicate and coordinate with Evidence Control.
  • Receive, document, inventory, transport, preserve, and return items of evidence. Under supervision of a qualified analyst, perform analytical techniques on forensic samples to assist with casework analysis. Provide expert testimony in a court of law as it pertains to involvement in a case.
  • Conduct regular inventories of laboratory equipment, supplies, and reagents. Perform purchasing duties related to managing inventory of laboratory reagents and supplies to include maintaining annual departmental expenditure information for departmental supervisors. Ensure all required information regarding equipment and reagents is properly and accurately entered into Laboratory Asset Module.
  • Maintain cleanliness of laboratory work areas including biohazardous waste. Perform necessary safety-related functions, and other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • Must have a bachelor's degree in a biological, chemical, forensic science, or related field from an accredited college/university or obtain one within 90 days of the posting date.
  • Must have a basic understanding of science and scientific principles involved in DNA analysis and have good communication skills.
  • Basic working knowledge of computers and commonly utilized programs.
  • Must be able to obtain competency and maintain proficiency in the appropriate categories of testing or job functions.
  • Position may require overnight travel for training and/or court., and some lifting of evidence up to approximately 20 pounds.
  • There is no residency requirement for this position. However, the employee is expected to report to the Forensic Services Laboratory in Columbia, SC during normal business hours Monday-Friday (8:30am-5:00pm).

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer experience in a laboratory environment.
