Overview
The Epidemiology/GIS Specialist analyzes spatial data through mapping software and design digital maps with geographic data and various other data sets of or relating to, causes and locations of disease outbreaks. This position discovers patterns and trends through spatial mapping and developing mapping applications and tools and managing a digital library of geographic maps in various file types. The Epidemiology/GIS Specialist identifies patterns and trends through spatial mapping that will be utilized to better understand spread of disease.

The Epidemiology/GIS Specialist identifies patterns and trends through spatial mapping that will be utilized to better understand spread of disease.
Responsibilities
- Designs and updates gee-databases, enters new map data, and analyzes existing GIS data
- Creates and converts GIS data from a wide variety of sources including but not limited to AutoCAD, Excel, Access, various image formats
- Maintains up-to-date and accurate geospatial documentation for reference
- Oversee data flows, management, and distribution activities related to GIS
- Performs data capture for GIS product
- Manages database and develops effective spatial mapping that can be understood
- Provides consultative guidance and technical expertise in geodatabase analysis and design, geographic information application programming, spatial data and/or technology integration, modeling, web mapping applications, GIS project management and supervision, and/or other geographic information specialties
- Assists with development of future protocols related to disease investigations as well as guidelines for those who acquired the disease or were exposed to someone with the disease
- Utilizes the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) or other disease surveillance systems to report and monitor the incidence of infectious/communicable diseases across Nueces County
- Assists other departments in disease analysis and reporting as needed
- Exempt – Full-Time-Grant Funded- Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
- Must be available to work additional hours as needed
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
- In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS)
- Two (2) years of experience
Required
- A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hiring
