Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Job Description

Position Summary

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) serves as the Chamber’s primary leader, strategist, and spokesperson, responsible for advancing the interests of members and strengthening the business environment for organizations of all sizes. The CEO builds strong partnerships with business leaders, elected officials, and community organizations to advocate for pro-business policies, foster economic growth, and enhance community vibrancy.

The CEO oversees all aspects of Chamber operations, including strategic planning, membership engagement, financial management, staff leadership, and public relations. This position requires a visionary leader who can balance day-to-day management with long-term growth, ensuring that Chamber membership remains relevant, valuable, and impactful.


Essential Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership

  • Provide visionary and strategic leadership for the Chamber, Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Implement the Chamber’s strategic plan and adapt programming to meet evolving business and community needs.
  • Serve as the leading advocate for business in St. Matthews, representing the Chamber with professionalism and integrity.
  • Foster a positive organizational culture focused on collaboration, innovation, and member success.

Public Affairs & Advocacy

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local, state, and federal elected officials.
  • Monitor and communicate issues affecting businesses and the community.
  • Represent the Chamber in local, regional, and state coalitions and organizations.

Membership Engagement & Growth

  • Oversee membership recruitment, retention, and engagement strategies.
  • Ensure that members receive measurable value from Chamber programs, services, and benefits.
  • Evaluate and enhance events, sponsorships, and programs to meet member needs.
  • Build meaningful relationships with businesses of all sizes and industries.

Community & Economic Development Partnerships

  • Collaborate with community partners to support business recruitment, retention, and expansion.
  • Represent Chamber priorities on external boards, committees, and task forces.
  • Identify and foster partnerships that align with the Chamber’s mission and enhance community vitality.

Marketing & Communications

  • Act as the Chamber’s primary spokesperson to media, members, and the community.
  • Lead marketing and branding initiatives, including publications, digital communications, and social media.
  • Promote the Chamber’s role as a connector, convener, and champion for the business community.

Governance, Finance & Strategic Planning

  • Partner with the Board of Directors to establish and execute short- and long-term strategic goals.
  • Ensure strong financial management, including budget development, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Oversee fundraising and sponsorship initiatives to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Support and engage the Board of Directors through effective communication, planning, and governance practices.

Human Resources & Staff Development

  • Recruit, develop, and manage Chamber staff, fostering a culture of teamwork and accountability.
  • Conduct performance reviews, set goals, and provide coaching to support staff growth.
  • Ensure compliance with HR policies and maintain a positive and productive work environment.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree, or professional experience.
  • Demonstrated success in nonprofit, chamber of commerce, or business leadership.
  • Experience in strategic planning, financial management, fundraising, and advocacy.

Skills & Competencies

  • Visionary leader with strong strategic thinking and execution abilities.
  • Excellent communicator—skilled in public speaking, media relations, and written communication.
  • Proven ability to engage, inspire, and manage diverse stakeholders, including volunteers, staff, and board members.
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of public policy issues affecting the business community.
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and able to navigate complex and high-pressure situations with diplomacy.


Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally and regionally.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required for events and community representation.


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Office-based with regular interruptions; frequent off-site meetings and events.
  • Must be able to set up and support Chamber programs and events as needed (lifting up to 25 lbs occasionally).
  • Requires use of standard office technology (computer, phone, copier, etc.) and driving for Chamber business.
