Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Department of Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) is housed in the Division of Student Affairs. RecWell fosters comprehensive wellness by engaging students and the UNCG community in experiential and educational opportunities. We promote lifelong success through meaningful and inclusive programs and resources. RecWell offers comprehensive recreation and wellness programming including; fitness, aquatics, informal recreation, outdoor adventures, competitive sports, Esports, and wellness education. The department strives to provide opportunities that enhance student success.
The Division of Student Affairs encourages students to be engaged citizens through enriching their personal and professional development in a diverse and inclusive community of care.
Student Affairs Goals Include
The Assistant Director, Fitness is responsible for the overall design, management, and implementation of a comprehensive fitness program for the students, faculty, staff and UNC Greensboro community. This includes leadership of two professional positions and a graduate assistant as well as student employees. The incumbent is charged with providing the long term strategic vision and planning for the fitness program.
Minimum Qualifications
Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers
certification (or ability to obtain within first 60-days). Current certification from one of the following organizations: AFAA, ACE, NCSA, or ACSM.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of three years of demonstrated experience in fitness related fields specifically in fitness management, group fitness instruction, class programming, personal training, staff and instructor training, equipment evaluation, repair and replacement; certification from one of the following organizations: AFAA, ACE, NCSA, or ACSM.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Strong commitment to the development of students to provide leadership training, support academic success, and professional development
- Budget management experience
- Current certification as American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer (or ability to obtain within first 60 days of hire.
- Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours in addition to regular University hours.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, Recreation Management, or related field.
- Experience supervising professional staff or graduate assistants.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with diverse student populations.
- Experience with reservation or recreational software such as Innosoft Fusion, CSI, EMS, WhentoWork and Connect2.
- Marketing, promotions, and communications experience.

Administration
Essential Tasks
- Oversees fitness program for Recreation and Wellness, in addition to planning and supervising the Group Fitness and Personal Training programs.
- Responsible for direct supervision, hiring, training and evaluation of two full time professional staff and one graduate assistant.
- Implement continuing education strategies for professional and student staff to enhance skills including, but not limited to, one-on-one meetings, training, functional unit meetings, workshops, certifications, and conference attendance.
- Develop, execute, and maintain short and long-term financial strategies including revenue forecasting and planning for operational and capital budgets for the fitness program.
- Design and implement assessment of student learning for staff and participants. Regularly reports assessment and statistical data pertaining to operations, program participation, and staff development.
- Serves as part of the Recreation and Wellness management team to deliver a comprehensive collegiate recreation program, and assists with the selection and delivery of recreation activities and student employment practices that contribute to student success and well being.
- Assists the Associate Director in managing a risk management plan for the student staff, which is designated to prevent injuries as well as prepare the students to respond appropriately to accidents, injuries and life-threatening emergencies.
Programming
Essential Tasks
- Provide fitness programming which meets the needs of participants. Stay current with fitness trends while also balancing the safety concerns related to such trends.
- Responsible for managing aspects of fitness programming such as studio inventory and audio/visual technology, through facility software management systems such as Fusion, Connect2, and TimeTap.
- Assist in managing cases of participant dissatisfaction and discipline participants and student employees for inappropriate behavior according to Campus Recreation and University policies.
- Collaborate with campus partners and other RecWell staff to develop and implement events and activities for the students to engage in physical activity and help improve their overall well-being.
Equipment Management
Essential Tasks
- Establish and monitor a preventative equipment maintenance and repair program as well as research and recommend new exercise equipment and develop a short and long term replacement schedule.
- Work with vendors to develop positive relationships for keeping the equipment in top performance capabilities.
- Research new equipment and trends to ensure the fitness programs are well situated to offer high quality programming.
- Maintain the safety and integrity of the weight and fitness spaces.
Other
Essential Tasks
- Serve on departmental and university committees and work teams.
- Instruct department offered American Red Cross/AED/First Aid courses.
