General Summary

Under the direction of the Vice President, Transformation & Integration Excellence, the Director, Transformation is responsible for planning, monitoring, and directing the effective implementation of initiatives that drive tangible organizational results. Key responsibilities include overseeing daily activities of Transformation Consulting staff and activities in the areas of application support, analytics and reporting, process improvement and project management including ensuring alignment of all activities to System objectives and initiatives. The Director supports development of process and project acumen throughout the organization and ensures that all staff coach others to spread their expertise.

The Director is responsible for managing and coordinating enterprise-wide solutions that help Henry Ford Health achieve its strategic and operational objectives. The Director will organize and oversee efforts directed through the senior leadership of Henry Ford Health that address strategic planning, continuous improvement, waste reduction, and innovation.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities

  • Oversees the daily activities of Transformation Consulting and other Henry Ford team members, student interns, and outside consultants working on projects under the Director’s purview.
  • Responsible for directing and supporting Performance Improvement team members – in a matrix relationship to HFHS operational leaders - as they provide leadership to operating units, service lines, and departments. Performs resource planning and scheduling of transformation consulting team members to ensure customer requirements are met.
  • Serves as a change agent within Henry Ford Health, supporting both the identification and application of new improvement concepts and driving the spread of best practices throughout the System.
  • Teaches transformation methods (e.g., lean, and other process improvement methodologies, design thinking), tools, and applications in all functions and levels of the company and is a resource for utilizing statistical process control within processes, as appropriate.
  • Coordinates work with other strategic support services areas including planning, analytics and IT, quality, finance, facilities, marketing, and clinical and non-clinical operational teams across the systems as related to project under their purview.
  • Manages a team of TC team members. He/she will mentor and coach team members and actively lead employee engagement and support team member professional development. The Director will also lead recruiting activities to identify, recruit, and retain top talent.
  • Chairs and staffs’ committees and meetings as needed. Supports Henry Ford Health Leadership System councils/committees through information sharing, presentations, and execution of initiatives as identified.
  • Critical thinking, problem solving, analytical approach, relationship building, flexibility, innovation, and creativity are necessary characteristics.
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned.
    • Conduct review of organization and functional areas on a project basis; act as project lead for individual and team projects. Viewed as an improvement expert and responsible for the implementation of transformative methods (e.g., process improvement methodologies) to include the initiation, planning, execution, control, and closing of projects and programs in accordance with strategic plans and organizational goals.
    • Be a systems-thinker - identify need and guide others in the development of systems and structures that promote strategically aligned activities and sustainable results.
    • Directly manages the enterprise-wide programs and initiatives including, but not limited to, designing and improving the initiative approach, ensuring initiative deliverables, report-outs of progress to senior leaders, and overall initiative performance.
    • Demonstrate proven project management skills. Able to manage large, complex assignments simultaneously with potentially conflicting priorities and deadlines. Independently lead and facilitate assigned projects in collaboration with team members and leaders. Facilitate multi-disciplinary transformation teams; guide teams through decision making for complex process/function changes including developing and defining project scope and objectives, developing and refining project work and implementation plans, and guiding day-to-day activities of the project teams. Facilitate large redesign projects, assisting senior leaders in maximizing resources and efficiencies.
    • Effectively collaborate with key stakeholders including other strategic support service areas (planning, analytics and IT, quality, finance, facilities, marketing, and clinical and non-clinical operational leaders) to create comprehensive multidisciplinary recommendations for executive leadership
    • Provide consulting advice to top administrative and medical staff executives and management. Able to lead/provoke the thinking of senior level administrators and medical staff executives and leaders.
    • Prepare (and coordinate) the written and verbal presentations of findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Regularly provide written and oral project updates to senior management and other leaders, that may specifically reflect a change in schedule, resources, or product.
  • Manage, mentor and coach team members, actively lead employee engagement and support team member professional development. Actively lead recruiting activities to identify, recruit, and retain top talent.
  • Perform operational, financial, and administrative management activities pertinent to the role and scope of responsibility.
Education/Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required. A degree in industrial or related engineering, nursing or other healthcare related fields, business administration, healthcare administration (with quality or operations improvement emphasis), organizational development, or similar field is preferred.
  • Master’s degree in one of above fields preferred.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience, with specific emphasis in: business transformation, lean transformation, continuous improvement, customer service, systems analysis, working with outside consultants, group leadership and facilitation, interpersonal communication, team building.
  • Must have four to six (4-6) years progressively more responsible experience leading teams and managing people.
  • Strongly prefer candidates with a healthcare background.
  • Formal team management experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of and demonstrated experience applying continuous quality/service level improvement concepts.
  • In-depth understanding of human relations, group dynamics, change theory, and improvement methodologies.
  • Familiarity with key issues and trends in healthcare, and the ability to relate their impact to the organization.
  • Ability to think differently and implement solutions that drive stakeholder value.
  • Ability to explain complex problems and analyses and visualize the results in presentation or other formats for the audience to understand.
