WHEN & WHERE YOU’LL WORK:

Hybrid: This role is on-site 3-5 days a week at our Del Mar office due to the nature of the work involved.

A DAY IN THE LIFE:

A junior team member contributing to the consumer-oriented user interface of Tandem’s medical devices and applications. Participates in inspired, innovative, elegant, and highly usable interaction design solutions. Plays a supporting role in defining user experiences for new products and features.

UX Design Intern's at Tandem are also responsible for:

  • Contributes to the design of innovative end-user interfaces focusing on designs that are clean, clear, effective, and pleasing to the eye.
  • Works within the team to document specifications that engineering will reference to implement for final end-user interface design.
  • Supports the development of design systems, concepts, and prototypes for evaluation (visual wireframes, task flows, design screenshots, or interactive prototypes).
  • Takes design concepts and works towards completion of development phases under general supervision.
  • Participates in concept development as part of an interdisciplinary team including product development, advanced technology, marketing research, user experience research, and quality assurance.
  • Collaborates with peers and stakeholders to refine the user interface and experience.
  • Confirms completion of required training plan before assuming job responsibilities.
  • Ensures work is performed in compliance with company policies including Privacy/HIPAA and other regulatory, legal, and safety requirements.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of UX/UI design principles, design systems, best practices, and standards
  • Ability to communicate design ideas to team members through concepts, workflows, and prototypes to collect feedback to iterate and improve designs.
  • Strong visual design skills with familiarity with selecting color palettes and designing screen layouts and typography.
  • Experience in information layout and visual design principles.
  • Ability to design products that benefit consumers by being both pleasurable and easy to use.
  • Basic understanding of graphic, web, and software design principles as well as the limitations associated with these environments.
  • An excellent eye for design detail.
  • Competent in UX software such as Sketch, Adobe XD or Figma (preferred). Experience in animation software such as Principle, LottieFiles or After Effects a plus.
  • Strong aptitude for taking input from multiple sources and for synthesizing it into coherent designs.
  • Ability to learn new information quickly and to communicate clearly.
  • Genuine interest in learning from their peers and growing as a designer.
  • Skilled at presenting information in a clear, concise manner to all levels within the department.
  • Skilled at contributing on a consistent basis to team initiatives in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Able to react to changing situations in a timely, calm, and confident manner.

Minimum certifications/educational level:

  • Working towards a BA in Interaction Design or related fine arts/graphic design field preferred, or equivalent experience in UX boot camp and other applicable job experience.

Minimum experience:

  • Portfolio of work required. Curriculum portfolio pieces accepted, personal projects preferred.
  • Intern experience in related environment valuable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, see, talk, or hear in a standard office environment. In a lab setting, occasionally use hands to finger, handle objects, tools, or controls. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The starting base pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00 per hour. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market.

YOU SHOULD KNOW:

A conditional offer of employment from Tandem is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment screening process comprised of a drug test (excluding marijuana) and background check, which includes a review of criminal history information.
