Description

The Virginia Zoo is looking to welcome to the team Train Ride Operators.

Train Ride Operators are responsible for providing a fun and memorable experience for guests of The Virginia Zoo. Train Ride Operators will provide fun, exciting educational animal and Zoo facts to riders of The Virginia Zoo train while ensuring safety compliance.

This is a seasonal, part time non-exempt position. Position reports to Train & Gift Shop Manager.

Weekends and occasional evenings required. Zoo hours are 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily safety inspection/audit of train and train tracks.
  • Complete opening and closing checklist.
  • Understand and demonstrate the proper use of safety practices during loading, while train is operating, and during offloading.
  • Accurately process monetary transactions for train rides and adhere to all cash handling policies.
  • Monitor guest’s adherence to rules and safety procedures.
  • Operate train in a safe manner: utilize throttle and breaks to drive train at appropriate speed for layout and weather conditions; constantly visually monitor surroundings to identify potential safety concerns; utilize train whistle and bell to alert Park guests.
  • Provide excellent guest experience by providing riders animal and Zoo facts throughout the duration of the tour.
  • Responsible for cleaning and maintaining the attraction facility both guests facing and back of house.
  • Greet and interact with guests as they enter and when waiting in the loading area.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.

Education And Experience

  • One year of customer service experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Be able to stand, walk and move around for up to eight hours per day.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds capacity at times.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be confident, energetic, and self-motivated with a desire to deliver outstanding customer service.
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and manner.
  • Ability to work in a team environment or alone for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work indoor and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
