Position Summary

The Assistant Coach plays a key role in supporting the Head Coach with all aspects of team development, including training, match preparation, and player growth. This position collaborates closely with the coaching staff to plan and execute high-quality training sessions that align with the club’s tactical and developmental goals. In addition to on-field responsibilities, the Assistant Coach is expected to stay informed on soccer industry trends, conduct ongoing competition analysis, and contribute strategic insights that support team success. The ideal candidate is fully aligned with USL Spokane’s mission and values, demonstrating a strong commitment to community engagement, player safety, inclusion, and high-performance culture.

Key Or Essential Functions

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the duties listed below. The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

Training

  • Serves as Assistant Coach for Spokane Velocity FC, performing all assigned duties under the direction of the Head Coach.
  • Plans, prepares, and executes training sessions in collaboration with the coaching staff.
  • Develops Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for players, evaluates performance through regular assessments, and provides individualized feedback to support skill development, team integration, and continuous monitoring with adjustments as needed.
  • Actively collaborates with coaching and support staff to coordinate high-performance programs aimed at optimal player preparation, injury prevention, and recovery. This includes regular meetings to monitor player wellness, mental health, and holistic care. Openly receives feedback, shares expertise, and consistently advocates for player well-being and performance-enhancing strategies. Creates and maintains a drill library and session logs.
  • Reviews and integrates training performance data to manage training loads and periodization.
  • Coordinates and communicates all away training logistics with administrative staff.

Games

  • Manages video analysis software by reviewing, editing, and delivering clips to players and team.
  • Maintains expert, up-to-date knowledge of USL and relevant leagues and conducts ongoing opponent analysis.
  • Prepares tactical analyses for upcoming matches, including set-piece strategies, and supports real-time in-game adjustments.
  • Analyzes post-match data and performance metrics to generate reports that inform future training and team development decisions.

Handles game day administrative roster tasks assigned by the Head Coach.

Recruitment

  • Assists the Head Coach with player recruitment, scouting activities, and youth academy integration by mentoring young players and facilitating pathways to the senior team (as needed).

Administration

  • Supports the Head Coach with additional duties to promote club success, player health and safety, and overall club objectives.
  • Adapts to flexible hours, including extended days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overnights due to travel requirements.

Leadership

  • When assigned by head coach, participates in and leads regular team meetings, generates agendas, and collaborates with coaching staff on content and direction.
  • Builds and fosters positive, professional working relationships with staff across performance, medical, equipment, operations, and administration departments.
  • Promotes a clear understanding of USL League regulations among staff, coaches, and players while fostering a positive team environment aligned with USL Spokane's culture, mission, policies, and safety standards.
  • Communicates feedback clearly to the team and makes decisions that align with USL Spokane's club objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a USSF National B license required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in sports management, business administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years direct experience coaching at any level required, professional level coaching experience preferred.
  • A combination or accumulation of applicable work-related experience and/or education may be recognized as sufficiently meeting the requirements based upon educational programs and specific experience.
  • Ability to pass comprehensive background check including a motor vehicle report.
  • Possess and maintain a current and valid driver’s license and maintain legally required insurance.
  • Previous experience should include:
    • Experience working with athletes, coaches, and technical staff
    • Experience serving as a member of coaching staff
    • Thorough knowledge of the professional soccer environment and technical components, including US and international soccer markets
  • Proven ability to build respectful working relationships and effectively communicate with employees, management, vendors, contractors, and community partners.
  • High degree of personal initiative.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrates superior customer service skills by ensuring each interaction leaves the individual feeling heard, appreciated, understood, and valued.
Compensation And Benefits

  • Exempt level position with a salary range of $80,000 to $85,000.

Equipment / Tools Utilized

Frequent use of:

  • Computer operations (laptop & desktop hardware), including 10-key functions
  • Office equipment including copy machines, computers, and phone
  • Other equipment deemed necessary

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in a combination office setting and work performed in the field which includes traveling out of town, conducting work in various soccer stadiums and within the USL Spokane soccer stadium, and locker rooms.
  • Ability to work with moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noise while performing work in the field and at the stadium.
  • Essential position functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to:
  • Stand or sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Regularly talk, hear, and walk
  • Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist
  • Lift, carry, push, and /or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 50 pounds
  • Operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard with ability to grasp and reach
  • Utilize verbal and written communication to exchange information
  • Near / Acuity: Clearly see 20+ feet with or without corrective lenses.

Working Conditions

While performing the essential job functions, the employee may experience the following conditions:

  • Position will require flexible hours which will include extended days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overnights due to travel.
  • Deadlines and goals may generate stress.
  • Noise Conditions: exposed to a variety of noise conditions including noise consistent with a standard office environment on a regular basis and exposed to loud noise while in stadium, on the road, and working directly with coaches and players.
  • Heat/Cold: May be subject to heat, cold, wet and/or humid weather conditions, and occasionally extreme heat and/or cold.
  • Atmospheric Exposure: Exposed to typical office environment conditions as well as some work conducted while outside and in the soccer stadium.
  • Injury Exposure: May be exposed to mechanical equipment used to support players in their training.
  • The club may accommodate some work from home and remote work based upon the needs of the club and suitability for the position.
