WORK SCHEDULE: Alternates between a Tuesday—Sunday Show Run Schedule, Monday—Friday Off Show Schedule.
SALARY: $29.55 per hour. Benefits Eligible after 90 days.
Position Summary
Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Berkeley Rep) has grown from a storefront stage to an international leader in innovative theatre. Known for its ambition, relevance, and excellence, as well as its adventurous audience, the nonprofit has provided a welcoming home for emerging and established artists since 1968. Over 6 million people have enjoyed more than 500 shows at Berkeley Rep, including 86 world premieres. Berkeley Rep shows have gone on to win 8 Tony Awards, 9 Obie Awards, 11 Drama Desk Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 1 Pulitzer Prize, and many other honors. In recognition of its place on the national stage, Berkeley Rep received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1997. Through its annual seven-play season, together with up to four special event presentations, Berkeley Rep invites audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.
Berkeley Repertory Theatre seeks a Sound Engineer to be a key member of Berkeley Rep's Sound and Video department. The Sound Engineer is responsible for normal operation of Berkeley Rep productions, including: load in, load out, technical rehearsals, show run, production video needs, and regular maintenance and shop work for the Sound and Video Department. The Sound Engineer will work very closely with other production departments, as well as visiting actors, designers, and artistic staff, and therefore must have exceptional interpersonal skills. Berkeley Rep's Sound Engineer is expected to be a leader and technician committed to the artistic vision and mission of Berkeley Rep, and will also share Berkeley Rep’s commitment to antiracism, equity, diversity, access, and inclusion.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Act as the front of house or backstage sound engineer for main stage productions.
- Work with the rest of the sound and video team to load shows in and out of rehearsal & performance spaces.
- Work with incoming production teams on special events, rentals, and co-productions.
- Work in close conjunction with all production departments to ensure a collaborative and smooth process between the needs of each production area.
- Work in close conjunction with front of house staff to ensure that late seating monitor feeds, docent talk PA systems, and any assisted listening devices work well for the patrons of Berkeley Rep.
- Help organize and maintain the sound and video equipment and work areas.
- Set up and run rehearsals, company events, talk backs, and workshops as assigned.
- Program and mix on digital consoles, and audio software.
- Work closely with stage management, actors, wardrobe, and run crew on mounting and maintaining wireless microphones on actors or moving pieces of props and scenery.
- Work closely with musicians on microphone placement and personal monitoring.
- Manage and maintain shows without supervision once they are open.
- Lead small crews and work calls as needed.
- Generate paperwork for operational and archival purposes.
- Actively participate in workshops and training as requested, including harassment prevention, bystander intervention, and other initiatives related to antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access.
- All other duties as assigned by the Sound and Video Supervisor.
- At least 2 years or more experience in theatrical sound at a comparable theater or venue.
- Knowledge of current audio equipment standards (maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting), current wireless technologies, current digital consoles, and current industry standards.
- Working knowledge in sound software such as: Qlab, Logic, Protools, Wireless Workbench, Studio Manager, Cuestation, Compass, SMAART, etc.
- Knowledge in computer networking including but not limited to IP standards and Dante networking.
- Experience mixing Musicals line-by-line.
- Experience with theatrical body micing and wireless systems.
- Knowledge of safe rigging practices is desirable.
- Working knowledge of Clear-Com products, analog and digital intercom systems, and CCTV systems.
- Ability to produce show paperwork for training, show run and archival purposes.
- Interact with a diverse group of constituents including visiting directors, designers, artists, administrative staff, technical crews, and students.
- Work in a detail-oriented manner, be resourceful, adaptable to change, and a creative problem solver.
- Carry out physically demanding activities. To reach above head, climb, lift and maneuver 50 pounds frequently.
- Work comfortably at heights such as on catwalks, ladders, steel grids, and lifts.
- Demonstrated commitment to antiracism, equity, diversity, access, and inclusion.
- Strong communication skills with a high degree of emotional intelligence and cultural competency.
- Driver’s License is desirable and highly recommended.
