The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a vital member of the McAdams community, fostering a safe and supportive environment for students, staff, and families. This role is especially focused on working with students who experience behavioral challenges, requiring a compassionate, trauma-informed approach to law enforcement and student engagement. The SRO shall support and enforce student behavior as well as security protocols and policies and conduct training for employees for safety and emergency drills.

Safety & Security

  • Maintain a visible and approachable presence on campus to deter criminal activity and promote safety.
  • Respond to incidents involving threats, violence, or other emergencies in accordance with school and law enforcement protocols.
  • Collaborate with school administration to develop and implement safety plans, drills, and crisis response strategies.

Student Support & Engagement

  • Build positive relationships with students, particularly those with behavioral or emotional challenges.
  • Participate in behavior intervention teams and support plans (e.g., IEPs, 504s, BIPs).
  • Use de-escalation techniques and restorative practices to resolve conflicts and reduce disciplinary referrals.

Education & Prevention

  • Provide classroom presentations on topics such as bullying prevention, substance abuse, internet safety, and conflict resolution.
  • Educate students on legal rights, responsibilities, and consequences in a developmentally appropriate manner.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with counselors, social workers, and special education staff to support students’ behavioral and emotional needs.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and local law enforcement agencies.
  • Attend school meetings, parent conferences, and community events as needed.


Qualifications:

  • Law enforcement experience is required; active commission is preferred but not required.
  • Experience working with youth, preferably in educational or behavioral health settings.
  • Training in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and restorative justice preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of adolescent development and behavioral health.
  • Familiarity with school-based mental health services and special education processes.
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities are a plus.

 

  • CONDUCT: The School Resource Officer must, at all times, model pro-social behavior and be able to teach, correct, and instruct students and volunteers to do the same.
