Summary
The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) RN Coordinator provides clinical coordination and direct nursing care within the bariatric surgery program, serving as a key member of the multidisciplinary team. This role includes pre- and postoperative assessments, perioperative planning, patient education, triage, and support through seminars and groups to ensure safe transitions and optimal outcomes. In collaboration with the MBS Medical Director and operational leaders, the Coordinator facilitates for program compliance with the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Responsibilities include facilitating committee and accreditation activities, maintaining protocols, monitoring outcomes data, driving quality improvement, and educating staff with a focus on patient safety. The Coordinator also acts as liaison between the facility and bariatric surgeons, managing call schedules and verifying coverage criteria. Working with the MBS Reviewer, the Coordinator ensures timely outcomes reporting to the MBSAQIP registry. The organization provides the Coordinator with the authority and resources to carry out these responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Monitors and facilitates for accreditation criteria to ensure that the center meets expectations set forth by governing agencies. Maintains and ensures compliance of all policies and procedures that guide and support bariatric services. These include, but are not limited to DNV-G requirements, federal and state regulations and MBSAQIP standards.
Maintains knowledge of preoperative, perioperative and postoperative processes (pathways, protocols, and all elements associated with the coordination of patient care).
Serve as the primary clinical point of contact for bariatric patients from consult through long-term follow-up; perform nursing triage and symptom assessment by phone and in-person.
Conduct comprehensive preoperative nursing assessments (including vitals, comorbidities, medication reconciliation, functional status, and readiness for surgery).
Coordinate and clinically prioritize pre-op testing and consultations (cardiology, pulmonary, nutrition, behavioral health, sleep studies) and follow up on abnormal results.
Provide standardized pre-op education (preparation, diet progression, DVT/PE prophylaxis, wound care, pain control, smoking cessation) and reinforce postop instructions.
Triage and manage postoperative concerns — assess wound/incision, hydration, pain control, signs of infection or other complications; escalate per protocol and coordinate urgent evaluation/re-evaluation when needed.
Collaborates with the MBS Medical Director, operational leaders, staff, and physicians to foster communication, address clinic needs, implement solutions, and integrate evidence-based improvements.
Coordinates data collection, ensures accuracy with patient records, and facilitates timely reporting to the MBSAQIP Registry. Administrates the MBS Committee meeting three times annually, ensuring one of the three meetings is a comprehensive program review (annual requirement).
Maintains knowledge of quality improvement goals related to patient outcomes and care coordination.
Provides a leadership role in policy/ pathway development as well as review and maintenance of existing policies.
Provides and maintains staff and patient education for the center, hospital, students, and community organizations, aligning with best practices, patient outcomes, and clinical policies.
Supports bariatric program staff, educators, and marketing initiatives by planning, delivering, and evaluating education and providing specialty consultation to healthcare providers, nursing schools, and the community.

Minimum Requirements
- Associates in Nursing
- Bachelors Nursing preferred
- RN Lic AZ
- BLS
- Minimum 2-3 years of clinical nursing experience in perioperative, PACU, surgical med-surg, case management, or bariatric care; prior bariatric experience preferred.
