Job Summary

This position will work with the Satellite Training unit to research and develop scientific weather satellite training materials that translate advanced scientific concepts into accessible communication for academic and technical audiences. The end-use stake holders could include academic, government, commercial and non-profit audiences. The position requires the ability to work creatively, independently, and as part of a team.

The candidate must have effective writing and communication skills and is expected to pursue collaborations with experts nationally and internationally. The candidate is also expected to contribute to professional journal articles, assist in proposal preparation, and to make technical presentations at national and international scientific meetings.

This position would have strong communication and science exchange connections between UW-Madison SSEC/CIMSS and the NOAA National Environmental Satellite Data Information Service (NESDIS) line office and NOAA Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) located at the University of Maryland campus to include on-site location accommodations. This positions headquarter location will be at the University of Maryland, 8229 Baltimore Ave, College Park, MD.

This position is located in the Satellite Training operational area.

Key Job Responsibilities

Frequent exchanges and strong connections between UW-Madison SSEC/CIMSS and the NOAA National Environmental Satellite Data Information Service (NESDIS) line office and NOAA Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) located on the University of Maryland campus.

  • Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, authors or co-authors publications, and disseminates information to appropriate entities through various communication mediums
  • Reviews and evaluates results
  • Develops and implements complex research projects, methodologies, procedures, and criteria
  • Assists with writing and submitting grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area
  • Collects and analyzes complex research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures
  • Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and student workers

Compensation

Starting salary will be based on experience and qualifications. Well-qualified applicants can anticipate earning a minimum of $100,000 annually, with final salary based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Broad understanding of current weather satellite science for GEO and LEO weather decision support and remote sensing applications
  • Understanding of global weather model efforts such as the Next Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS) and Unified Forecast System (UFS)
  • Able to coordinate and construct team science proposal for submission to Federal Agencies (NOAA/NASA)
  • Experience managing large meteorological satellite science projects
  • Experience in training meteorologists in the use of meteorological satellite information for weather decision support
  • Familiarity with NOAA National Weather Service Office of Science and Technology Integration (OSTI) and NASA research communities and leadership
  • Capable of coordinating technical meetings and conferences

Education

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters degree in a science field required.
