Research Technician

The role

We are seeking to appoint a Research Technician to support a prestigious HBLB-funded project investigating anthelmintic resistance in cyathostomins on Thoroughbred stud farms in the UK and Ireland. This exciting study aims to improve parasite control strategies using cutting-edge molecular diagnostics, including nemabiome sequencing. The successful candidate will join a collaborative research team at Bristol Veterinary School and play a key role in sample collection, faecal egg counting, and larval culture. The role involves regular travel to stud farms, liaising with farm staff and veterinary surgeons, and maintaining accurate records of sample metadata and treatment protocols. You will work closely with a Research Associate and academic staff to ensure smooth delivery of the project.

What will you be doing?

• Collecting faecal samples from horses across 25 stud farms.
• Performing faecal egg counts using the Mini-FLOTAC technique.
• Culturing larvae for downstream molecular analysis.
• Preparing samples for DNA extraction and sequencing.
• Maintaining detailed records and supporting data entry.
• Liaising with stakeholders to coordinate sampling schedules.
• Supporting general laboratory operations and compliance
  
  

You should apply if

• You have experience in parasitology, veterinary diagnostics, or equine health.
• You are confident working with horses and in field settings.
• You have practical experience in faecal egg counting and/or larval culture.
• You are highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.
• You have excellent communication skills and enjoy working with stakeholders.
• You are willing to travel regularly across the UK and Ireland.

Contract type: Open ended (fixed funding for 20 months)

Work pattern: 21 hours

Grade: F

Salary: £28,778 – 32, 080 per annum (pro rata)

School/Unit: Bristol Veterinary School

Shift pattern: 3 days per week
