The department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation is seeking a self-motivated, positively minded, effective, organized, and team-oriented individual to join the Outdoor & Community Recreation Education (OCRE) program.

The Recreation Manager will manage and teach Recreation (REC) physical activity-based courses, manage local and regional industry partnerships to support current Outdoor and Community Recreation Education (OCRE)/REC students and future enrollments, and may support other programs within the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) department. The individual must have experience teaching in a variety of outdoor recreation skill areas, and will teach such classes for HPER each fall, spring, and summer semester, totaling approximately 10 credits per year. Some OCRE/REC activity courses will be taught in the evening and over weekends. The individual may assist the OCRE/REC programs on outdoor and overnight trips and will work professionally as a team member with faculty and staff members, administrators, and students with little or no instruction. The successful candidate must possess the ability to manage projects and courses independently, efficiently, and effectively with quality and work ethic to support the overall efforts of the program. Responding to requests in a timely manner with appropriate priority and with professional communication, balancing deadlines, and organizing daily workload are essential. Knowledge of the program’s degrees and their curricula and courses is necessary. The Recreation Manager reports to and is supervised by the department chair. The department chair may assign other job responsibilities not listed.

Required

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2 years of full-time experience managing and/or administering collegiate/community/education/commercial outdoor recreation programs. This includes managing, purchasing, and renting gear, gear maintenance and repair, acquiring and maintaining permits with state and federal land management agencies, planning and packing backcountry food rations and more.
  • Experience training trip leaders in the previously mentioned outdoor activities, and a working knowledge of wilderness safety and risk management standards in those activities.
  • Experience building collaborative industry partnerships to support program goals of recruitment and enrollment, internships, community engagement, and research.
  • Experience teaching technical outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, canyoneering, rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, road biking, canoeing, paddleboarding, sea kayaking, whitewater rafting and kayaking, snowshoeing, winter backpacking, cross-country skiing, in-bounds skiing/snowboarding, avalanche education, backcountry skiing/snowboarding, fishing, wilderness medicine, etc.
  • Possess and maintain current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification or higher.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft and Google software suites.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Outdoor Education, Leadership, or closely related field.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience in sport coaching and/or working with youth recreation programs.
  • Experience with various trip and route opportunities in Utah and nearby states.
  • Outdoor certifications such NSP, AMGA, ACA, A3 avalanche training, Leave No Trace, instructor-level credentials, etc.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • 2 or more semesters experience teaching technical outdoor activities (see list above) in a college/university setting.
