Power Supply Engineer
STRM Recruiting
About the Opportunity
A leading provider of embedded electronics and digital video hardware is seeking a Power Supply Engineer to design and develop switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) and related power electronics used across a portfolio of industrial, embedded, and OEM products.
This is an on-site, hands-on engineering role ideal for someone who enjoys working close to the hardware, owning designs end-to-end, and collaborating with a small, highly capable engineering team.
What You’ll Do
Power Supply Design & Development
- Design, simulate, prototype, and validate SMPS power supplies, including AC-DC and DC-DC topologies.
- Select and specify power transistors, controllers, inductors, magnetics, and filter circuits.
- Develop schematics and design documentation using industry-standard CAD tools.
Testing, Troubleshooting & Optimization
- Perform hands-on bench testing using oscilloscopes, power analyzers, electronic loads, and related test instrumentation.
- Debug switching and power-stage issues, optimize efficiency, and reduce noise/EMI.
- Conduct validation, reliability testing, and technical performance analysis on new and existing designs.
Collaboration & Documentation
- Work closely with hardware and firmware engineering teams to integrate power designs with larger systems.
- Produce detailed design documents, test reports, BOMs, and revision notes.
- Participate in design reviews, provide technical recommendations, and contribute to continuous product improvement.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
- Proven experience designing SMPS power supplies (AC-DC and/or DC-DC).
- Strong hands-on familiarity with:
- Power transistors and switching devices
- Inductor and magnetic component behavior
- Filter and protection circuits
- SMPS control methods and topologies (flyback, buck, boost, LLC, etc.)
- Experience using engineering design tools such as LTspice, Altium, and/or OrCAD.
- Ability to clearly and confidently communicate engineering decisions in English.
- Must be able to work on-site at the Tigard, Oregon engineering facility (remote not available).
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)
- Experience with EMI/EMC mitigation in switching power supplies
- Familiarity with thermal considerations in power electronics
- PCB layout experience or collaboration with layout engineers
- Knowledge of embedded systems or mixed-signal hardware
- Background in industrial, embedded, or instrumentation products
What You’ll Love About This Role
- Meaningful, tangible engineering work
- You own your designs, prototype them, and see them become real products.
- Small, tight-knit engineering team
- Clear communication lines, fast decisions, and high visibility.
- Standard daytime work hours
- A healthy, predictable work schedule that supports work-life balance.
- Generous benefits
- Comprehensive benefits package supporting your health, stability, and long-term well-being.
- Low bureaucracy, high ownership
