Part Time Head Lifeguard

General Statement of Job

Enforces rules and regulations to provide for the safety and welfare of patrons. Monitors activities and performs services at the pool area to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers and customers. Provides a high level of customer service with a winning attitude. Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Pearland Natatorium or City Swimming Pool (as assigned) in the absence of the Assistant Pool Manager, Manager or Aquatics Manager.

Supervisory Functions

This position supervises lifeguards and water safety instructors at the Pearland Natatorium in the absence of the Aquatics Manager and, if assigned to the City Pool, supervises lifeguards and cashiers in the absence of the Assistant Manager and Manager.

Essential Functions

Regular and timely attendance at work, as scheduled.

Provides exemplary customer service to all facility users including, but not limited to, members, class members, facility rentals and school district and club athletes and coaches.

Supervises work of lifeguards and water safety instructors at the Pearland Natatorium in the absence of the Aquatics Supervisor.

If assigned to the City Pool, supervises the lifeguards and cashiers in absence of manager and assistant manager.

Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe use of the pool.

Actively monitors for swimmers in distress.

Assists and/or rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid and CPR.

Maintains order in swimming areas by enforcing rules and regulations of the City of Pearland Aquatics Division.

Performs daily maintenance functions of cleaning deck, restrooms, grounds, and building, etc.

Determines chlorine content and pH value of water with water testing kit and logs information appropriately.

Inserts and removes lane lines as required.

Works days, evenings and weekends as required.

Immediately reports unsafe equipment, facility, chemical, etc. issues to management.

Participates in and or leads required in-service trainings and other meetings.

Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licenses

Minimum age for consideration is 16 years of age.

A minimum experience of one (1) full swim season (minimum of two seasons preferred.) Other non-aquatic management experience may be considered.

Certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding required.

Certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor required.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification or equivalent is required prior to start of work.

Requirement For Pre-interview Swimming Test

• Swim 300 yards continuously using only the front crawl or breaststroke.
• Swim 20-25 yards, submerge to 13 feet of depth, retrieve a 10 lbs. weight, and return to the starting point while holding the weight with both hands. There is a time limit of 100 seconds to complete this test.
• Tread water for two (2) minutes with no hands.
  
  

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; ability to perform these operations using units of U.S. money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Ability to operate a backboard, rescue tubes, first aid supplies, cash register, concessions equipment, lane lines, time clock, cleaning supplies, water testing kit.

Skill in applying emergency aid and lifesaving measures; skill in water rescue methods; skill in swimming.

Ability to remain calm under stress; ability to monitor vital signs of an individual; ability to accurately see objects at a distance; ability to verbally communicate in an effective and professional manner with the general public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.

Ability to follow oral and written directions.

Ability to work mornings, days, evenings and/or weekends as required.

Knowledge of water safety techniques, lifesaving and rescue methods; knowledge of first-aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) methods.

Knowledge of the methods, chemicals, tools, and equipment used in the operation, and maintenance of public swimming pool facilities; knowledge of pool use and policies and regulations.
