BASIC FUNCTION: This position is for a certified athletic trainer or physical therapist to provide athletic training care, injury evaluation, and rehabilitation of athletes in support of sustained excellence in sports performance. This is a contract position with USA Track & Field, based in Chula Vista, CA, but with remote assignments at competitions, training camps, and other remote duties requiring travel – both domestic and international.

- Perform as an athletic trainer or physical therapist for assigned athletes. Health care includes examination and evaluation of injuries and illnesses, developing and applying care plans - to include rehabilitation programs using active care, therapeutic modalities, and manual treatments. Assist with athlete / patient management to include arranging referrals to outside sources. Develop rehabilitation and return to play plans for athlete / patients sustaining injuries requiring surgery or extensive rehabilitation.
- Act as the primary USATF medical liaison for a cohort of approximately 15-20 elite US track & field athletes located in Chula Vista, CA (and athletes in other locations as assigned). This duty will require daily or weekly contact with the assigned cohort of athletes, to include attendance and health care at scheduled practice sessions of Chula Vista resident and rotation athletes, phone calls, or video conferencing. This duty will also require the submission of weekly reports on all assigned athletes to an electronic portal selected by USATF.
- Attend and provide care at local, national, and international competitions of elite USATF athletes, primarily Paralympic athletes, as assigned. Attend and provide care at training camps at various national and international locations as assigned.
- Communicate to USATF Para High Performance staff (including USATF employed / contracted physicians and Paralympic Team Physician) and (when appropriate) USOPC Sports Medicine leadership on the medical status of injured athletes, while maintaining appropriate compliance with medical privacy laws. Refer athletes as needed for additional services, such as mental health counseling / sport psychology counseling or sport nutrition counseling.
- Maintain medical records including recording and entering all patient athlete medical interactions and related data into electronic health record system in a complete and timely manner.
- Provide for athlete / patient management in accordance with licensure, scope of practice, standards of care and functions of individual professional licensure, job description including high clinical competency.
- Maintain compliance with IOC, IPC, USOPC, WADA, USADA, SafeSport and the Olympic Medical Code to provide for the protection and maximization of sports performance from each athlete.
- Maintain knowledge of up to date techniques in the enhancement, prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
- Coordinate and execute special projects, as assigned and other duties (not listed), as assigned.
- Perform additional medical related duties, as licensed and permitted by State law.
- Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training
- Preferred Education: Master’s degree in Athletic Training or Doctor of Physical Therapy
- Current Health Care Provider CPR certification
- Maintain licensure for state of employment or certificate in good standing as an Athletic Trainer or Physical Therapist .
- Manual therapy certifications preferred .
- Current certification in Anti-Doping Training completed within 10 days of start date
- Current certification in Safe Sport Training completed within 10 days of start date
- Completion of criminal, driving record, and medical licensure background screens within 10 days of start date
- Minimum 3 years of sports medicine clinical experience after licensure or certification – experience with a variety of high-level athletes and sports preferred
- Electronic Health Record experience preferred
- Experience with athletes with physical, visual and/or mental impairments preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must possess strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population including, but not limited to, USATF and USOPC clinicians, athletes, coaches, administrative staff, physicians, volunteers and other medical personnel.
- Continuously comply with standards of care, including local, state, and federal health and safety standards, rules and regulations.
- Maintain skill sets to include Blood Borne Pathogen, emergency procedures and sports related concussion training.
- Possess or have a willingness to gain knowledge related to standards of care for athletes with spinal cord injuries, amputations and other Paralympic related impairments.
- Maintain knowledge of standards of care to include current techniques in the enhancement, prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
