Position Information

$81,120 - 133,380

The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Primary Role

This role will lead and mentor a geographically dispersed team of Recruiters who are responsible for sourcing and attracting talent for defined client groups across American Water focused on collaboration, accountability, and delivering results. You will help create and utilize effective talent acquisition systems/approaches/strategies, best practices, and process improvements to deliver operational excellence. Delivering results by overseeing recruitment operations, implementing best practices, and ensuring your team meets key performance indicators (KPIs).

Key Accountabilities

  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Responsible for supervising and directing the work efforts of American Water’s Talent Acquisition Partners, Coordinators, and Sourcers.
    • Reports into and works closely with Director, Talent Acquisition.
    • Provides coaching for employees, conducts performance reviews, and ensures that Recruiters develop robust professional development plans.
    • Accountable for the performance management and results of employees within the organizational unit.
    • Makes decisions that are guided by and interpreted through metrics, policies, procedures, and the broader business plan.
    • Responsible for the application of the end-to-end talent acquisition process with team of recruiters including requisition creation and approval, engagement with hiring manager, sourcing strategies, applicant review process, selection process, notification of offer or rejection, background check and onboarding, and closing the requisition.
    • Collaborates with TA/TM/HR leadership to identify talent gaps and makes recommendations to meet business needs/growth.
    • Serves as a member of the extended Talent Management Leadership team and serves as a catalyst for building a ‘best in class’ TA organization.


  • Projects & Performance Improvement
    • Supports and/or may lead small to large enterprise-wide projects effectively; including, initiating, planning, analyzing, executing, measuring and communicating progress.
    • Works closely with on compliance and TA related projects.
    • Helps oversee the usage of the AW’s Recruiting module; responsible for consistent and compliant application; assesses the effectiveness and efficiency of the system; makes recommendations for changes or enhancements.
    • Helps develops key metrics to measure the effectiveness of talent acquisition processes.
    • Measures impact and helps to pilot test new talent acquisition strategies, techniques, tools and processes.


  • Direct Recruiting
    • Manages a requisition workload in addition to leadership.


  • Vendor Management
    • Assists in vendor selection, contract negotiations, relationship management, performance management, etc with TA Director and Supply Chain (as needed).
    • Performs other responsibilities as assigned.

    Knowledge/Skills

    • Recruiting best practices.
    • Microsoft Office suite of products.
    • Expert level proficiency with ATS systems (SuccessFactors experience a plus).
    • Various recruiting methodologies, including social, Boolean searches, etc.
    • Ability to establish and organize people and tasks to focus on goal attainment.
    • Superior verbal, written and presentation communication skills; with ability to do public speaking.
    • Strong coaching, counseling and teaching skills.
    • Ability to collaborate with virtual teams and also face to face.
    • Ability to proactively engage and influence others at all levels, at times without formal authority.
    • Excellent internal and external customer service.
    • Confidence and ability to have critical conversations, if necessary.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with different groups with diverse needs and requirements to develop and deliver workforce education.

    • Open to feedback and willing to accept ‘stretch’ assignments and projects.

    Experience/Education

    • At least 8 years’ experience in the field of Recruiting.
    • At least 3-5 years of experience leading a team of Talent Acquisition professionals across multiple locations.
    • Familiarity with compliance requirements in government contracting, including OFCCP and EEOC regulations and other state/local regulations, maintaining equitable and inclusive hiring practices.

    Travel Requirements

    • Up to 25% travel as required.
