JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Health and Safety Specialist supports the radiation safety office programs and mission on the UT Health Science Center (UTHSC) campus. This position is responsible for laboratory inspections; inventory management of laser, radioactive materials, ionizing radiation producing machines; management of dosimetry used on campus; management of dosimetry records; tracking and calibration coordination of radiation survey instruments; data management; PI audits; providing training to campus personnel; and processing receipt of and disposal of radioactive materials, lasers, and ionizing radiation producing equipment.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of work experience in safety, emergency response, and hazardous waste management, including knowledge of state and federal requirements or duties listed above; OR a combination of education and related experience to equal six (6) years. Must obtain and maintain a security clearance for unescorted access to the irradiator.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS : Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, walk for 30 minutes at a time, stand on feet for 1 hour at a time, and climb a ladder.

This position is responsible for laboratory inspections; inventory management of laser, radioactive materials, ionizing radiation producing machines; management of dosimetry used on campus; management of dosimetry records; tracking and calibration coordination of radiation survey instruments; data management; PI audits; providing training to campus personnel; and processing receipt of and disposal of radioactive materials, lasers, and ionizing radiation producing equipment.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Performs field survey and documents the findings for locations using radioactive materials (including leak tests), x-ray/ionizing radiation machines, and lasers in accordance with UTHSC policies.
- Receives and checks in radioactive materials, x-ray/ionizing radiation machines, and lasers in accordance with UTHSC procedures.
- Coordinates x-ray surveys with device owners on campus and contractors surveying to ensure all campus x-ray units are inspected in accordance with UTHSC procedures and Tennessee Division of Radiological Health Regulations.
- Reviews dosimetry reports to determine any excess exposures and initiates radiation exposure investigation.
- Assigns dosimetry, collects dosimetry for processing, and cancels dosimetry upon departure of the wearer.
- Utilizes the Landauer and Mirion portals to effectively manage campus dosimetry and generate exposure reports.
- Responds to radioactive materials spills, monitor for contamination, clean up or supervise the cleanup of materials, dispose of contaminated debris, monitor post cleanup, and report incidents in accordance with UTHSC procedures.
- Collects, tracks, and manages the disposal of radioactive materials and sources.
- Updates EHSA data and audits EHSA timely.
- Provides formal (using established training materials) and informal training to campus personnel and students on the safe and complaint use of radioactive materials/sources, x-ray devices, and lasers and documents training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of Tennessee Division of Radiological Health Regulations and Research Safety Office UTHSC procedures.
- DOT-trained shipper for radioactive waste shipments.
- Skilled in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Skilled in the use of EHSA, Mirion portal, and Landauer portal.
- Skilled in the use of liquid scintillation counting and portable radiation survey instruments.
- Written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient math skills (Algebra).
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
