Job Description:

Hickerson Lawn Care is seeking a highly skilled, experienced, and results-driven Divisional Fertilization Manager to lead and optimize our fertilization and weed control division. This is a pivotal leadership position responsible for the strategic planning, operational execution, and quality assurance of all fertilization programs, ensuring exceptional turf health and client satisfaction.

The Divisional Fertilization Manager will oversee all aspects of the division, including managing a team of applicators, developing and implementing effective treatment programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving continuous improvement in service delivery and efficiency. This individual will be a key contributor to our reputation as a leader in lawn health in the Columbia area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning & Program Development:
    • Design, develop, and refine comprehensive fertilization and weed control programs tailored to the unique needs of turf in the Columbia, MO region, considering soil types, climate, and common turf issues.
    • Stay abreast of industry best practices, new products, and innovative techniques in turf nutrition and pest management.
    • Develop and manage the divisional budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and profitability.
  • Operational Leadership & Execution:
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the fertilization division, including scheduling, routing, and dispatching fertilization crews.
    • Ensure all applications are performed accurately, safely, and in accordance with established protocols and label instructions.
    • Monitor application quality, coverage, and effectiveness through regular field inspections.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve complex turf health issues and client concerns related to fertilization.
  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and supervise a team of skilled fertilization technicians/applicators.
    • Conduct performance reviews, provide ongoing coaching, and foster a culture of safety, excellence, and continuous learning within the team.
    • Ensure all team members possess and maintain necessary licenses and certifications.
  • Pesticide & Chemical Management:
    • Manage the inventory, storage, and safe handling of all fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and other turf treatment products.
    • Ensure strict adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations regarding pesticide application, storage, and disposal (e.g., Missouri Department of Agriculture).
    • Maintain accurate records of chemical usage, applications, and client interactions.
  • Quality Control & Customer Satisfaction:
    • Implement rigorous quality control measures to ensure superior results and client satisfaction.
    • Address client inquiries, concerns, and feedback promptly and professionally, providing expert advice and solutions.
    • Proactively communicate with clients about treatment plans, expected outcomes, and follow-up care.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive safety protocols for all fertilization activities.
    • Conduct regular safety meetings and ensure all equipment is properly maintained and operated safely.
    • Ensure full compliance with all environmental regulations and best management practices.
  • Reporting & Administration:
    • Maintain detailed records of applications, product inventory, client communications, and team performance.
    • Generate regular reports on divisional performance, profitability, and key metrics for senior management.
    • Utilize industry-specific software for scheduling, tracking, and reporting.
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Turfgrass Management, or a related field preferred. Relevant professional certifications and extensive experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of direct experience in professional turf fertilization and weed control, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • REQUIRED: Valid Missouri Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (Categories 3 & 5, or equivalent for turf & ornamental/right-of-way) or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Demonstrated expertise in turfgrass identification, common lawn diseases, insect pests, and weed identification in the Midwest region.
  • Thorough understanding of soil science, plant nutrition, and the proper use of various fertilizer types and chemical products.
  • Strong leadership, team-building, and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with relevant software (e.g., CRM, scheduling, mapping, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks associated with lawn care, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
