Join a team of scientists, operators, and engineers who work with water quality data to protect the health of our community and the Poudre River watershed. As a Data Engineer Intern with our One Water Team, you’ll help shape the future of how we use data to manage one of our city’s most vital resources.
You’ll work side-by-side with experts who value curiosity, collaboration, and public service. Your work will directly support environmental sustainability, public health, and operational efficiency — all while gaining hands-on experience with modern data tools and real-world municipal systems.
What You’ll Do
City of Fort Collins One Water team safeguards public health and the environment every day. By joining us, you’ll see how data drives everything — from energy efficiency to nutrient recovery — and you’ll gain the experience and mentorship to launch a meaningful career in civic tech, environmental data, or engineering systems. You’ll leave with a portfolio of projects that show you can solve real-world problems.

What You’ll Do
- Build and maintain data pipelines that connect sensors, lab results, and operational systems to the City’s Azure Synapse data lake.
- Use Python and other programming languages to clean, transform, and automate environmental datasets.
- Create insightful dashboards in Power BI that help teams make smarter, faster decisions.
- Develop and deploy Power Apps for field staff to streamline data collection and reporting.
- Job shadow with Water Treatment and Water Reclamation Plant operators and water quality lab technicians to understand the context of the data you will be working with in this internship.
- Collaborate with plant operators, analysts, and engineers to identify opportunities for automation and visualization.
- Document your work to ensure data integrity, transparency, and long-term usability.
- Attend department and project meetings.
- Network and meet professionals from across the City and Utilities.
- Share a Presentation of Learning to your department at the end of your internship.
- Demonstrated cultural competence to effectively interact, work, and develop meaningful relationships with people of diverse identities, perspectives, and cultural backgrounds.
- Strong learning orientation. Leverages all resources and is creative in ways of learning for self to continue adapting to changing issues and trends.
- A desire and ability to understand the diverse needs of internal and external customers, and to create experiences and deliver services that exceed their expectations.
- A desire and ability to utilize digital tools for organizational information, individual, and teamwork.
- Currently pursuing or recently completed training or education in Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Please include relevant classes on your resume.
