Position Summary: The New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) is the largest public school system in the United States. It serves over one million students across more than 1,800 schools in the five boroughs of New York City. The system is responsible for managing public education from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Its mission is to provide a high-quality education that prepares every student for success in college, career, and life.

The Office of Medicaid Operations (OMO) within the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) is responsible for managing and overseeing Medicaid reimbursement for eligible special education services. It ensures that the NYCPS complies with federal and state regulations related to Medicaid claiming. The office collaborates closely with schools, providers, and other offices to collect the necessary documentation and data for billing Medicaid. Its goal is to support the city's educational and financial priorities by maximizing Medicaid revenue without compromising service quality or compliance standards.

Under the direction of the Director of Medicaid Operations, the Data Analytics Intern/Consultant is responsible for analyzing and interpreting complex data to identify trends, generate insights, and support data-driven decision-making across NYCPS.

Reports to: Director of Medicaid Operations

Key Relationships: Works closely with Director of Medicaid Operations, Office of Medicaid Operations & Special Education Finance staff; DIIT; various departments across NYCPS.

Responsibilities

Data Analysis

  • Problem-solving and analytical understanding for statistics and data.
  • Technical skills and competency in using data analytics software like PowerBI, etc.
  • Identifying trends and generating insights by conducting routine analyses of NYCPS’ various data systems.
  • Communicate key findings to various stakeholders to facilitate data-driven decision-making.
  • Recognize key metrics and build high-level dashboards to track the progress of the agency’s metrics and its highest priority initiatives.
  • Aggregate data from various sources to construct streamlined data pipelines and integrate data from multiple systems.

Operational Support

  • Provide support involving data analysis and assisting the team in testing new software applications.
  • Continuously strive for ways to improve operational efficiency, develop reports, and maintain spreadsheets/data metrics to monitor, track, and evaluate performance.
  • Coordinating activities with other offices.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled into a college or university. Graduate or recent graduates are welcome to apply.
    • Major in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in Database management systems (SQL Server and MS Access)
  • Data science programming language (SQL)
  • Data visualization software (PowerBI)
  • Knowledge of database principles.
  • Familiarity with MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
  • A high capacity for independence, relationship-building, and creativity.
  • Being flexible to work with the unknowns and deal with unexpected events.
  • Ability to think critically and critique assumptions.
  • Strong analytical, research and communications skills are required.
  • Interest in and knowledge about NYC government and policy efforts
Salary: $21/Per hour 

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
