Responsibilities
The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer of Community Memorial Healthcare. This role includes oversight of academic programs and initiatives across the entire system, including graduate and undergraduate medical education, advanced practice provider education, and continuing medical education.
The CAO, who also serves as the Designated Institutional Officer (DIO), leads and oversees all Medical Education aspects of the academic mission at Community Memorial Healthcare. This includes oversight of all educational programs, research programs, the institutional review board, academic affiliation agreements, academic promotion, grants management, and continuing medical education. This executive sets the strategic academic vision for Community Memorial in partnership with physician and administrative leadership across the enterprise and is responsible for insuring compliance with regulations and regulatory bodies in all aspects of the academic mission .
Qualifications
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
This position directly oversees the work of an Executive Assistant, Director of Medical Education, GME Librarian, Teaching Physicians employed by Community Memorial – Ojai, Resident Wellbeing Coordinator, five (5) Program Directors, as well as program coordinators.
Additionally, this role along with the Chief Administrative Officer, Ambulatory Medicine share oversight of the Sr. Director of Operations Ambulatory Medicine.

Qualifications
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Oversee GME programs to ensure alignment with ACGME standards and organizational goals, as well as non-accredited, and nonstandard training programs.
- Lead UME initiatives to foster a culture of inter-professional learning and collaboration.
- Support the development and implementation of education programs for advanced practice providers.
- Ensure CME offerings align with inter-professional learning objectives and support ongoing professional development.
- Ensure compliance with ACGME institutional and program requirements.
- Oversee residency and fellowship program evaluation results and action plans.
- Oversee annual institutional evaluation results and action plan.
- Collaborate with the Graduate Medical Education Committee.
- Academic Program Oversight
- Provide comprehensive oversight and administration of all academic programs, including graduate medical education (GME), undergraduate medical education (UME), and continuing medical education (CME).
- Ensure all programs comply with relevant accreditation standards and maintain institutional records, reporting, and evaluation processes.
- Foster the development and implementation of educational curricula that emphasize inter-professional competencies, teamwork, and collaborative practice.
- Develop effective GME policies that promote learner and faculty well-being.
- Develop effective GME policies that ensure resident and fellow education while simultaneously protecting patient safety.
- Provide curriculum design expertise.
- Evaluate and improve education programs within CMH.
- Serve as a resource to promote culture change as needed.
- Serve as first contact with ACGME, National Resident Matching Program.
- Inter-professional Learning and Collaboration
- Champion the integration of IPE into the curriculum, supporting faculty, staff, and student initiatives to create meaningful inter-professional learning opportunities.
- Build and sustain relationships with academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and community partners to facilitate inter-professional collaboration and shared learning experiences.
- Develop and implement tools to measure the effectiveness of IPE initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with institutional goals.
- Facilitate inter-professional practice and education (teaming).
- Interface with other institutional leaders, including those responsible for the clinical learning environment.
- Represent GME perspectives at the greater institutional leadership level.
- Serve as executive management team member.
- Faculty and Staff Development
- Provide leadership and support for faculty and staff in developing inter-professional learning capabilities, including training, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities.
- Establish mechanisms to acknowledge and reward faculty and staff contributions to inter-professional learning and collaborative practice.
- Oversee remediation and discipline of learners.
- Oversee the effectiveness of program directors and program coordinators.
- Develop effective GME policies that promote education.
- Support, develop, and mentor both learners and faculty.
- Facilitate the development of the skills needed by faculty to fulfill their roles as educators.
- Serve as a resource and advocate for program directors.
- Operational Management
- Work collaboratively with college deans, program directors, and other academic leaders to ensure alignment of academic programs with inter-professional education goals.
- Develop, justify, and manage budgets to support innovative educational models, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources for IPE initiatives.
- Oversee the hiring, training, and evaluation of faculty and staff involved in inter-professional learning, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and academic standards.
- Advocate for learner salaries and benefits.
- Address a wide variety of human resources, regulatory, compliance, and legal issues.
- Ensure compliance with government standards for learners who hold J-1 visas.
- Health System Strategy
- Serve as the GME Leader in the development of multi-organizational strategic partnerships, collaborations, and alliances.
- Provide insights, implications, and potential consequences to system wide strategic options.
- GME Strategy
- Develop a continuous 5 year strategic plan for GME within CMH’s overall Strategic framework. “Continuous” is defined as a 5 year plan updated annually.
- Seek Faculty, Resident, and Medical Staff leaders’ insights as to how the GME programs and curriculum can positively impact the clinical care of patients at CMH.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
