JOB SUMMARY: This individual will provide non-medical personal and/or companion care to the client(s) in the client(s)’ residence and outside of the residence as needed. Individuals must be able to deal maturely with the demands of the job and keep client information confidential. The individual must be committed to the concepts, philosophy, and mission of FirstLight Home Care, and possess the desire to assist clients to maximize their independence and reach their fullest potential in their personal residence.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential job duties for this position include the following items. Other duties must be performed as assigned or required.

  • Activities of daily living (ADL) that may include but are not limited to the following: 
  • Assist clients with personal hygiene, including shower, tub or bed baths, oral care, hair, skin and nail care. 
  • Assist clients in the use of toilet facilities, including bed pans. 
  • Assist clients in and out of bed, excluding the use of mechanical lifting equipment unless trained and documented as competent. 
  • Assist clients with walking, including the use of walkers and wheelchairs when applicable. 
  • Assist clients with self-feeding and clearing away of dishes. 
  • Remind client to take medications
  • Assist clients with completing prescribed exercises as provided by a trained, health professional
  • Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) may include but are not limited to the following: 
  • Sweeping and mopping floors and vacuuming carpets and rugs. 
  • Cleaning the kitchen, including washing dishes, pots and pans; cleaning the outside of appliances and counters and cupboards; cleaning ovens; and cleaning refrigerators. 
  • Maintaining a clean bathroom, including cleaning the tub, shower, sink, toilet and emptying and cleaning commode chair or urinal.
  • Laundering clothes in the home or laundromat, including washing, drying, folding and putting away. 
  • Changing linens and making beds.
  • Washing insides of windows
  • Removing trash from the home


  • Assistance with meal planning and preparation, including special diets under the supervision of a registered dietitian or health professional. 
  • Completing essential errands and/or unassisted transportation for nonmedical, community activities.
  • Assistance with correspondence and mail collection.
  • Minor pet care.
  • Assistance with outdoor tasks including raking leaves, gardening, and removing snow from client walkways. 


QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, the individual in this position must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the minimum knowledge, skills, abilities, certifications, and educational experience required.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or, one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of housekeeping activities and cooking, with attention to dietary recommendations.
  • Experience in interacting with clients and families as well as working on a team.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURE, & REGISTRATION

  • State required certifications may be required depending on client need. 
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain valid auto insurance. 


LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and understand short instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively communicate through written and verbal English language.

  • Ability to quickly evaluate situations and make complex decisions using critical thinking and reasoning.

Please note that all Caregivers could potentially be exposed to illness and/or bodily fluids through client’s homes and there are specific measures under OSHA guidelines that must be followed at all times to protect our staff and our clients that will be reviewed during new employee orientation. 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to:

  • talk or hear 
  • use hands or fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls 
  • stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms
  • lift and/or move up to 15-pound objects
  • assist client in getting up from a laying or seated position, using trained techniques to avoid injury to both parties
  • exhibit close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus
