Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Dearborn College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL) has an exciting opportunity for an Academic Advisor Intermediate/Pre-law Advisor. CASL is home to traditional liberal arts and science majors, such as English, Psychology, and Biology, as well as interdisciplinary majors like Criminology and Criminal Justice and Women?s and Gender Studies. CASL Advising works with undergraduate transfer students from orientation until graduation, and with freshmen once they have successfully transitioned from the first year advising center (START). CASL Advising also assists CASL graduate programs with records support and graduation audits.

Responsibilities*

General academic advising (60%):

  • Manage a caseload of 300-350 undergraduate students
  • Meet with 8-10 students daily via in-person appointments, virtual or phone appointments, or drop-in appointments: provide academic advising to undergraduate students on course selection, curriculum requirements, registration deadlines, college and university policies, and campus resources; provide accurate information, advice, and counsel regarding academic/career options; make appropriate referrals to support services
  • Outreach to specific populations of students, such as probationary students, those with early alerts, etc
  • Assist students with preparing for study abroad and complete advisor recommendation
  • Prepare and review junior year audits
  • Answer questions via email from students, faculty, and staff

Pre-law Advising (30%)

  • Meet with pre-law students (both current and alums) from all colleges to provide guidance on the law school application process, with particular attention to candidacy building, personal statement writing, and LSAT preparation.
  • Develop pre-law programming in collaboration with the pre-law faculty advisors, Pre-Law Association, and local law schools; promote internal and external pre-law programming through the pre-law website and targeted email campaigns.

Records functions (5%):

  • Review, evaluate, and request changes to advanced standing for courses taken off-campus; facilitate the review of petitions by faculty and process any required changes
  • Assist at academic orientation for incoming freshmen (5%)
  • Special projects/duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • A minimum of two years' experience in advising/counseling or higher education administration
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and a commitment to detail-oriented accuracy
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks, work under pressure at peak times, and set priorities
  • Ability to exercise initiative and work independently
  • Positive, service-oriented approach to tasks, and an eagerness to assist students
  • Ability to learn new skills, use new technologies, and understand new policies
  • Demonstrated high levels of energy, initiative, and integrity

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in a liberal arts or science field
  • Master's degree in higher education or student affairs
  • Two or more years advising liberal arts students
  • Knowledge of student development theory; experience with using multiple advising philosophies
  • Working knowledge of Banner, Degree Works, and Salesforce
  • Experience with case management model of academic advising
  • Experience working on a regional commuter campus with a diverse student body

Work Schedule

Regular scheduled hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm with occasional nights, weekends, and travel.

A hybrid position with the potential for up to 2 days per week remote work.
