Job Summary

The Maintenance Technician I performs entry-level work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, rights-of-way, facilities, and related infrastructure. Responsibilities include street patching, sidewalk repair, sign installation, snow and ice removal, storm cleanup, and general maintenance. This role involves heavy manual labor, safe use of tools and light equipment, and supporting senior technicians in routine and emergency operations to ensure safety and functionality of the City’s infrastructure.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current valid Colorado class “R” driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Traffic control and flaggers certification (or ability to obtain within one year).
  • Up to one year of experience operating light equipment.
  • Up to one year of experience in street/stormwater maintenance activities.
  • Working knowledge of City geography.

Preferred

  • Understanding of light equipment operation and maintenance (e.g., trucks, tractors).
  • Knowledge of street and stormwater maintenance procedures.
  • Familiarity with safety practices and procedures, including work zone setup and traffic control.
  • Basic understanding of traffic control measures and work zone safety standards.
  • Proficiency in operating snow removal equipment (e.g., loaders, trucks with plows).

Essential Functions

  • Perform maintenance on streets, alleys, and stormwater systems (e.g., patching, paving).
  • Operate and maintain light and medium equipment.
  • Assist in snow removal and ice control operations.
  • Set up and maintain traffic control devices for safe work zones.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on equipment.
  • Complete accurate records of work performed.
  • Maintain shop and equipment cleanliness and safety.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and participate in on-call rotation.

Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A

Travel: Standard Local Travel: This position requires occasional local travel within the County. Employees may be expected to walk or drive short distances to attend meetings, trainings, or perform work at other city buildings or partner sites.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors across various facilities, including office buildings, warehouses, outdoor areas, rooftops, and confined spaces.
  • Work may involve proximity to sensitive or secure areas, including access control points, server rooms, and alarmed facilities.
  • Outdoor work may involve exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • The position may require working on or near equipment that generates moderate to loud noise, vibrations, dust, or fumes.
  • Work may involve exposure to loud noise, vibrations, odors, hazardous chemicals, and uneven or slippery surfaces.
  • May be required to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts as part of on-call rotations.

Physical Requirements

  • Mobility: Ability to move frequently throughout facilities, including walking, standing, climbing ladders, scaffolding, and work at heights when necessary for maintenance or inspections and navigating uneven surfaces.
  • Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 80 pounds occasionally, with assistance as necessary.
  • Endurance: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various environments, including noisy, dusty, or hot/cold conditions, while maintaining focus on safety and quality.
  • Dexterity: Ability to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination including safely operating hand and power tools.
  • Flexibility: Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach overhead and below waist level, and maintain awkward positions when performing work tasks.
  • Vision and Hearing: Ability to perform tasks that require visual acuity including distinguishing colors, sounds, and visual displays. Hearing ability to perceive verbal instructions, alarms, and equipment sounds in various work environments.
