The Department of Consumer and Business Services (DCBS) is a progressive business regulatory state agency dedicated to the mission of protecting and serving Oregon's consumers and workers while supporting a positive business climate. The department administers state laws and rules governing workers' compensation, occupational safety and health, financial institutions, insurance companies and building codes. The department has consumer protection and education programs, offices, and ombuds to help consumers, injured workers, and businesses.
This position is with the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB). WCB provides timely and impartial resolution of disputes arising under the Workers' Compensation Law and Oregon Safe Employment Act.
This position is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Here’s What You Will Do
As a Judicial Assistant, you will:
- Evaluate and interpret legal documents and stakeholder communications in support of 2-4 Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) to determine and implement appropriate processing decisions based on applicable statutes, rules, and agency policies and procedures
- Serve as liaison between the parties and the ALJs and Workers’ Compensation Hearings Division to interpret and resolve problems through negotiation
- Be responsible for complete working knowledge of applicable statutes, rules and policies as they apply to various situations that arise from processing legal documents, telephone requests and contacts with outside stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
Here’s what you need to qualify:
- Two years associate degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant Studies
- Eighteen months of paralegal experience
- Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates experience in legal work, independent judgment, legal terminology principles, concepts, systems, and processes
Requested Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
- Experience with legal and medical terminology.
- Excellent grammar, punctuation, proofreading, and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities while maintaining accuracy.
- Experience handling confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to accept guidance, embrace change, and contribute positively to a dynamic work environment.
- Outstanding attendance and reliability.

- Per the Pay Equity Law passed in 2017, an employee pay assessment will be conducted to determine what pay step the successful candidate will be offered. The assessment will be based on the relevant experience, education, training, and certifications documented in the application materials. On average, candidates new to state service will most likely be offered compensation in the lower to mid-level of the salary range.
- The salary range listed is the non-PERS eligible rate. If you are already a participating PERS member or once you become PERS eligible after 6 months of employment, the salary range will increase by 6.95% and the required 6% employee retirement contribution will be deducted from your pay.
