WQED
Date: 1 day ago
City: Pittsburgh, PA
Contract type: Full time
WQED Multimedia | Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid) | Full-time
Reports to: Marketing Director
About WQED
WQED Multimedia is an iconic public media institution—one of America’s original educational broadcasters. Today, we reach hundreds of thousands of neighbors across southwestern Pennsylvania through five broadcast television channels, streaming platforms, 24/7 classical radio, and education and community engagement programs.
This is a moment of real transformation. With major shifts in media consumption, the launch of new digital products like WQED+, the elimination of our federal funding, and growing demand for trusted, hopeful, local storytelling—WQED is evolving from a traditional broadcaster into a multi-platform community resource.
Joining WQED now means an opportunity to help shape how Pittsburgh connects through stories, culture, learning, and shared experiences: on air, online, and in person.
About The Role
You’ll use your creativity to elevate WQED’s visual impact by creating compelling content for print, digital, video, and broadcast, across a wide range of projects. We’re looking for someone with a strong point of view who can create visually compelling graphics while also seeing the big picture — thinking strategically and practically about brand alignment, scalability across channels, and the cumulative impression each design makes on our audience. The ideal candidate will bring expert knowledge of current design software, skill across every step of the design process from concept to final deliverable, and a strong understanding of branding and marketing.
Portfolio Required: To be considered, candidates must include a link to an online portfolio as part of their resume and/or cover letter.
Key Responsibilities
Describe your creative process - how do you approach new projects from a creative standpoint, while still aligning your designs with overall strategy and bigger picture goals?
Compensation & Benefits
The hourly rate for this position is $28.00-$35.00, commensurate with experience. Benefits include a PPO health insurance plan; employer-paid dental, vision, disability, and life insurance; and, after 12 months, a 5% employer contribution to a 403(b) retirement plan.
Equal Employment Opportunity
WQED Multimedia is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate the diversity of the communities we serve and are dedicated to fostering an inclusive, supportive workplace for all. Applicants with disabilities or those needing reasonable accommodation may contact [email protected].

Portfolio Required: To be considered, candidates must include a link to an online portfolio as part of their resume and/or cover letter.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with teams across the organization to create a wide range of materials, including logos and visual identities for programs, program blocks, and campaigns; print and digital marketing materials; and other creative assets.
- Manage the design process from initial concepts to completed deliverables, working with stakeholders for feedback and approvals throughout the process.
- Collaborate with WQED’s web /UX counterpart and the WQED+ app producer to incorporate designed assets into landing pages, content carousels, and other digital experiences.
- Translate ideas into engaging visuals that tell WQED’s story as we evolve from a traditional broadcaster into a community resource that connects neighbors and neighborhoods through shared experiences.
- Ensure visual assets are consistent with WQED’s established brand guidelines across all platforms, while helping us continue to strengthen and refine the brand over time.
- Participate in marketing planning/strategy sessions, bringing your own ideas, creative perspective, and design expertise to the table — not simply translating others’ concepts, but helping shape the visual direction from the start.
- Animate static designs into engaging motion pieces, including video intros, transitions, visual effects, and social-first content.
- Create motion graphics and 3D design elements that strengthen WQED’s visual storytelling across video, broadcast, digital, and social platforms.
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in graphic design, with demonstrated experience creating both static and motion graphics.
- Advanced proficiency with industry-standard design tools, particularly Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Curiosity and willingness to learn technical subject matter, especially as it relates to public media, broadcast, digital platforms, and storytelling.
- Strong creative judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills.
- A desire to continually improve your craft, explore new techniques, and bring fresh ideas to the work.
- Detail-oriented, collaborative, and able to receive, interpret, and apply constructive feedback.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a cross-functional marketing and content team.
- Advanced proficiency in DaVinci Resolve Fusion, Cinema 4D, Blender, or similar motion graphics and 3D design software.
