Forklift Driver Job Description

The Forklift Driver is responsible for safely operating powered industrial equipment to move, load, unload, stack, and organize materials within a warehouse, distribution center, or manufacturing environment. This role supports efficient material flow, inventory accuracy, and compliance with safety procedures while helping the team meet productivity and service goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate forklifts and other authorized material-handling equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Load and unload trucks, trailers, and containers while verifying quantities and condition of materials.
  • Move materials to designated storage, staging, production, or shipping areas.
  • Stack and organize pallets and products to maximize space and maintain accessibility.
  • Perform pre-shift equipment inspections and report damage, malfunctions, or safety concerns promptly.
  • Use scanners, labels, logs, or warehouse systems to track inventory movements accurately.
  • Follow company policies, OSHA requirements, and site-specific safety rules.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
  • Assist with cycle counts, order picking, pallet building, and general warehouse support as needed.
  • Communicate with supervisors and team members regarding priorities, delays, and issues affecting workflow.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid forklift certification or ability to obtain certification before operating equipment.
  • Previous experience operating forklifts in a warehouse, manufacturing, or logistics environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of safe material-handling practices, load stability, and warehouse safety procedures.
  • Ability to read work instructions, shipping documents, and labels accurately.
  • Basic math and computer skills for inventory and scanning tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and teamwork.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime or weekends, if required.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift or move materials within established safety guidelines.
  • Comfort working in warehouse or industrial environments with varying temperatures, noise levels, and moving equipment.
  • Ability to maintain awareness of surroundings and operate equipment safely in busy work areas.
