Job Duties:

We are seeking a tech-savvy entry-level Construction Inspector I to support Public Works Stormwater Operations. To perform inspections of stormwater best management practices, document field conditions, and assist with regulatory compliance. To prepare inspection reports and draft both compliance and non-compliance letters.

Representative work duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct routine and follow-up inspections of private and public BMPs to ensure maintenance and functionality.
  • Document inspection findings using established forms, databases, and photo records.
  • Draft inspection letters, including notices of compliance and non-compliance, for distribution to property owners or responsible parties.
  • Coordinate with property owners, contractors, and City agencies to explain inspection results and required corrective actions.
  • Assist with lake depth inspections.
  • Individual assignments are determined by the chain of command based on department needs.

Must have the ability to clearly document field conditions and present findings in a concise, understandable format through written reports, letters, and basic data entry.

**This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies **

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires High School, or GED, plus two (2) years of progressive experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

  • Basic knowledge of Stormwater Management principles
  • Basic knowledge of Erosion and Sediment control measures
  • Ability to interpret construction record drawings
  • Experience using computers
  • Experience operating small boats
  • Data entry experience
  • Experience using asset management software or similar
  • Report writing experience
  • Experience working with the public
