The Machinery Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of rotating and mechanical equipment across refinery assets. This position is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing mechanical systems associated with pumps, compressors, gas and steam turbines, and electrical power system components such as motors and generators.

The role focuses on identifying and implementing improvements in reliability, integrity, energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and safety. The Machinery Engineer collaborates across all organizational levels and with multi-disciplinary teams to enhance equipment performance and support refinery operations, maintenance, turnarounds, and capital projects. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, technical leadership, and continuous improvement to meet operational and sustainability goals

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

Engineering & Technical Support

  • Lead all phases of machinery engineering—from concept development, scoping, selection, and manufacturing through technical audits, acceptance testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and failure analysis.
  • Develop, review, and approve machinery and component specifications, including engineering, operating, maintenance, and reliability standards, policies, and instructions.
  • Provide technical review and approval of vendor calculations, drawings, and reports to ensure compliance with Chevron Engineering Standards (CES) and industry codes.

Operational Excellence & Reliability

  • Resolve operational and reliability issues during start-up and normal plant operations, ensuring minimal downtime and optimized performance.
  • Drive improvements in design tools, develop engineering procedures, and respond to technical inquiries with actionable recommendations.
  • Spearhead resolution of quality issues during equipment manufacturing; witness and approve factory acceptance tests to validate compliance with CES.
  • Implement effective work practices, applications, and tools for condition monitoring, machinery performance tracking, turnaround planning, and engineering work order development.

Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Lead machinery initiatives and reliability studies to enhance plant safety, integrity, and performance.
  • Support economic evaluations for proposed upgrades or improvements to rotating equipment assets.
  • Troubleshoot complex machinery problems, develop alternatives, and collaborate with condition monitoring teams to implement long-term reliability solutions.

Collaboration & Governance

  • Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Turnaround, Projects, and Construction teams to improve asset reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Capture and share lessons learned, ensuring integration into systems for sustainable improvement.
  • Promote adherence to CES for new or modified equipment; manage governance processes for deviations and recommend updates to standards as needed.
  • Interface with Global Manufacturing and Corporate Best Practice teams to share lessons learned and evaluate emerging technologies for application in refinery operations.

Work Environment

  • Office and field-based work in refinery or manufacturing settings.
  • Requires occasional travel for vendor inspections, factory acceptance tests, and corporate meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Experience: 5–10 years in rotating equipment engineering within oil & gas or heavy industry.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Working knowledge of industry-specific engineering manuals and codes, such as American Petroleum Institute (API) repair standards and practices.
    • Proven ability to analyse and understand complex situations quickly and develop practical, appropriate solutions to resolve high impact people/business/process issues
    • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint)
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Vibration CAT Level II

  • The anticipated salary range for this position is $116,800 – $230,900. The selected candidate’s compensation will be determined based on their skills, experience, and qualifications.
